My Diastasis Recti Surgery | One Year Post Op

Here you can see why I had surgery.

Here you can see my recovery.

It’s hard for me to believe that it’s been a year since I went through diastasis recti surgery.  I just had my one year post op appointment with my surgeon.  She was so happy with my results that she said I was a poster child for this surgery.  While at my appointment they took photos, then they showed me the before and after photos…I couldn’t believe the difference!  I think I forgot how bad my belly looked before surgery!

Before & After

Before & After

Due to the number of requests I receive about how I’m doing these days, I wanted to give an update along with pictures. I’ll answer some of the more frequent questions I get, and I’ll go into a little more detail on what life is like after the surgery.

IMG_2987

  • How soon post partum did you have your surgery?

I was 4 1/2 months post partum when I had my surgery.  The only reason I did it so soon after birth was for insurance reasons.  For the sake of your family I would say wait until the baby/babies are older!

  • How are you feeling?

I feel great!  The only time I notice anything is when I am working out.  Stretching or tightening the abdominal muscles does feel strange at times, with the occasional burning sensation.  The burning sensation I’m referring to, is not the muscle burn you get when working out, but a burning pain that I felt after my surgery.  I only notice this when I am pushing myself and my core is straining.

  • How long is the recovery?

I’m sure this is different for every person.  For me, I was feeling almost back to normal by 3 months post op.  I started to try and get some workouts in around 6 months post op, but time was still limited for that so not a lot of working out going on!

  • Do you regret your decision to have the surgery?

No, I am very happy with my decision.  I haven’t had any major issues with this surgery and feel so much better physically.  No more back pain, or workout limits, along with no longer having a terrible looking mommy tummy!

  • Are you happy with the results?

Absolutely!!  My surgeon did an amazing job!  Other than the fact that my skin is so thin below my belly button, which can’t be fixed, and is the result of having four babies, I think my belly looks great.

  • Would I recommend this surgery?

Well I would suggest trying physical therapy first.  Sometimes the gap can be fixed with the correct exercises.  Then if the therapist suggests that you get the surgery, then go for it!

I am currently using my Young Living essential oils to help with my scarring. My incision already looks pretty great and if I used my oils consistently I think it would be almost gone by now.  I’m currently using Lavendar, Lemongrass, and Vetiver diluted with a carrier oil on my incision. I’m also using these oils on my stretch marks.IMG_2988

I also used my essential oils once I got home from having my surgery. At the time, I only had the Young Living starter kit and was limited with what would help best with my pain management. I diffused Frankincense, Lavender, and Lemon oils for the entire time I was in bed recovering, along with putting Frankincense and Peppermint oils on my feet.

I hope I have covered most of the questions about the surgery.  Now I just need to get myself back in shape!

Young Living Essential Oils | Introduction

The hubby and I were introduced to Young Living essential oils back in 2014 and have been using them ever since!  We love them so much that we purchased a second Starter Kit, mainly for the diffuser!  I diffuse oils almost every night for the twins, especially while they are teething.  We diffuse oils throughout the day to help clean the air, help with stress, and even to help promote a good immune system.  We also use oils for headaches, stomach aches, burns, cuts, rashes and even for helping our 3 year old keep her panties dry at night.  We also use oils to clean!  The Thieves oil based cleaner is amazing, not only is it 100% natural but you can clean anything with it.  I’m all about chemical free products when it comes to cleaning around my 4 little girls.  When I get some free time I will share some ways I use my essential oils.

Here is some info about the company and how you can get your own essential oils!

Why did we choose Young Living?

We were very impressed by their product quality, the fact that they own their own farms, and their Seed to Seal process. They also hold their plants and oils to a very high standard and test their oils within the company and through a third party to make sure everything is 100% therapeutic grade and safe for use.seed-to-seal-infographic

New Year Goals

I have officially made it another year as a mom to four girls, four girls under 4 years!  These girls keep me busy, which keeps me from getting things done.  I don’t do New Years Resolutions but I do have some goals for this year.  Goals that I hope I will be more successful at keeping up with, now that the girls are getting older and a little more independent.

  • Spending more time in daily Bible study.  I have been doing my Bible study at night before I go to bed.  Well lets be honest, by that time my mind is shutting down so I’m not really getting much out of it.  I would really like to start doing this during the day, sometime in the morning or afternoon, but it is really hard to find a good time to study when you have a child constantly wanting or needing something.
  • Workout.  This one is almost as hard to get done as the Bible study.  I can’t workout when the twins are awake…I’ve tried!  The end result was me stopping minutes after starting due to a twin screaming under foot.  I hate to use nap time to workout when that is my peace and quiet time or my chance to fold laundry without the girls throwing it all on the floor!  I’m not a fan of gyms when I have a lot of options here at home; weights in the garage, Insanity, PiYo, or my newest discovery 8 minute workouts!  Evenings are hard timing around dinner, we don’t like eating after 7pm!
  • Stop yelling at my kids.  Ugh!  This is a hard one that I have been praying for patience to overcome.  On a good day the only yelling that is necessary is when I’m in another room calling for one of the girls, which isn’t really yelling.  On a bad day I feel like all I have done is yell.  I hate days like that.  Sometimes its like the older girls can only hear me if I yell or will only do what I ask when I have resorted to yelling.  Then I end my day with I-just-yelled-at-my-kid guilt.
  • Be a better mom.  Spend more time with my girls.  Let go of finishing the housework and just enjoy some time with them.  Doing what they want to do.  Plan more one on one outings with the older two, they are growing up fast!
  • Take time for myself.  This is one that I let slip by all the time.  I need to take some time away from the girls to get that refresher that a stay at home mom needs.  I always have better days with the girls when I have had some time away from them.  Grocery shopping doesn’t count!!

So these are the things I plan to work on this year.  Obviously I have a few timelines to work on but I will get this figured out!

15 months

The months just seem to fly by these days!  The girls are learning and doing new things everyday and I love watching how they interact with each other.  We are now seeing them communicate with each other.  I wouldn’t say they are “twin talking” just doing the normal baby talking but they do understand each other!

Skylee @ 15 months:
Weight: 19 lbs 4 oz – 17% (12 month: 17 lbs 2 oz)
Height:  30 1/4 in – 35% (12 month: 28 1/2 in)
Head: 45 1/2 in (12 month: 44 1/2 in)

Rylee @ 15 months:
Weight: 17 lbs 14 oz – 7% (12 month: 16 lbs 11 oz)
Height:  29 3/4 in – 17% (12 month: 28 3/4 in)
Head: 45 in (12 month: 44 in)

2012

This is the first time they have been more than a couple ounces apart on their weight!  We saw our new pediatrician at this appointment.  Dr. Sears resigned and this was her replacement.  I was very happy with the new pediatrician after meeting him and watching him interact with the girls.  Appointments with twins aren’t easy when you’re alone and to add to that they are going through the separation anxiety stage and didn’t want to be put down.  The new Doctor was so patient and friendly and took the time to let the girls get comfortable with him touching them before he got started.

He was very pleased with their good health and growth.  These girls are just very petite!2017

Teething has slowed down a bit.  We got a small break but I have a feeling more are coming.  They are starting to get that grumpy/fussy/teething thing going on.  I hated teething with just one child but having two at the same time is rough!

*The twins are teething again!  I’m just now finishing this post and they are at 16 months and have a first molar coming in.

We had our first stomach bug and it hit both of them!  One evening Skylee threw up maybe an hour after we put them to bed.  We get her all cleaned up and back in bed, leave the room, and Rylee throws up.  This continued on until about 3am, one then the other.  It lingered for a couple days and then they were back to normal.

2014

Where we are at this month:

PLAY

These babes are everywhere and into everything!  Walking, running, climbing, spinning….they think they can do anything that big sisters do!  It is so fun to watch them get caught up in a game of chasing big sisters around the house. Seeing those little legs going as quickly as possible but still wobbly cause they can’t quite run and listening to all the giggles!  Melts my heart.

Both girls are playing with dolls a lot these days. They especially love putting the doll in their baby doll strollers and pushing them around. One day they found Avery’s water baby and got in the biggest sister fight over it!  I knew immediately what these girls were getting for Christmas!  They also love being pushed around in the baby doll strollers!  Thanks to big sisters deciding to put them in the strollers and push them around.  Sometimes the twins will push each other, but I think majority of the time Skylee is the one riding and Rylee is pushing.

2013

Skylee loves to play with shoes.  She is shoe obssessed!  It doesn’t matter if its one of big sisters pretend shoes, Avery’s, Raegan’s, or even my shoes, Skylee will be putting them on and walk around in them.
Rylee has recently taken a liking to playing with blocks.  She likes to stack them and then show them to you saying “locks” and getting excited about what she has done!  She will also occasionally pick up a pretend shoe and walk around in them, but she isn’t as into it as Skylee is!
IMG_2854

EAT

These babes love to eat!  They don’t like having to wait for their food either.  They don’t have too many things they will not eat.  We are still introducing foods but most of the time they eat whatever we give them!

Skylee is the messy eater and just shovels in the food one fist full at a time!  We are starting to have to tell her to slow down or finish whats in her mouth before she can have more!  This could be why she has jumped up in her weight!

Rylee is a very clean eater.  Only if its a messy meal like lasagna does she get messy like Skylee!  She is very lady like with her eating!

Rylee's newest face!

Rylee’s newest face!

SLEEP

We have been sleeping good but then the teething started up again.

Sleep has been rough!  Sometimes they sleep all night without a peep, some nights they fuss just until they find their bink and go right back to sleep, then other nights they are up and wanting cuddled for a bit, a frozen bink, or even need some medicine for the pain. We have yet to drop that morning nap around 10:30am and I am fine with keeping it as I can get some things done while they are down.  After lunch around 1:30-2pm they take their long nap and sleep until 3:30-4pm.  Bedtime is at 8:30pm.  My kids do not do early bedtimes!  Never have!

2016

Skylee –IMG_2875
Miss Sky has definitely taken on the big sister role.  She is quick to help or lead Rylee around and even be protective over her, and it is just the sweetest thing ever…sometimes!  For the most part she is independent and does her own thing and likes to do things by herself.  She will get SO frustrated sometimes when trying to do things without help and its not until she is at her breaking point that she will finally let me help her!  She is also starting to be quite the Daddy’s girl.  She gets so excited to see Daddy when he gets home from work and will run right up to him!

At any sound of music she will start dancing or head bobbing.

Words: mama, what, Avery, Buggy(Bugatti – the dog), daddy, more, done – *I’m sure there are more words but these are what I recall hearing the most!

Teeth: 8 1/2

Likes: iphone/ipad, clapping(she claps all the time), watching big sisters, sleep, Rylee, Daddy, binky, eating, sucking on fingers, blowing raspberries, bath time, brushing gums, walking, being outside, mommy, dancing, music, dolls, chasing sisters

Dislikes: sisters bothering her, being overtired, falling, losing the binky, being hungry, mommy or daddy leaving, when anyone steals her stuff!

Rylee –
IMG_2878Rylee is the sweetest little girl!  Very caring and easy going.  She does get frustrated with her doll stroller sometimes and can have quite the meltdown.  She will quietly go off and play by herself and be perfectly content.  While teething she does like to be held a lot and is a mommy’s girl.  Lots of evenings I am cooking dinner with this girl chasing me around the kitchen or hanging on my hip!  Neither of the girls are fans of being around someone they don’t know very well but Rylee seems to be the worst about it.

Words: mama, dada, ya, Sky, done, nana (banana), locks(blocks), more –  *I’m sure there are more words but these are what I recall hearing the most!

Teeth: 8 1/2

Likes: walking, sleep, clapping, binky, Skylee, big sisters, eating, cuddling/hugging, sucking on fingers, blowing raspberries, the ipad/iphone, brushing gums, bathtime, music, dancing, spinning, climbing

Dislikes: sisters bothering her, waiting to eat/being hungry, being overtired, mommy leaving, teething.

I keep telling myself I will get better at blogging but life happens and this gets put on hold.  So this post is a combo of months 15 and 16!

Avery’s 1st soccer game!

Our friends put together a soccer team and asked us if Avery would want to play.  It is for kids 4-6 years old and she would know some of the other kids so we decided to go for it!  After her first game we asked her what she thought…her reply was “I just like practice.  There are too many kids in a game.”  Poor girl was overwhelmed by all the kids running around!!

This is my favorite picture of Avery kicking the ball!

IMG_2585 IMG_2586 IMG_2587 IMG_2589 IMG_2591 IMG_2592By the end of the season she was excited for her soccer games and was finally getting the hang of how to play!  Next year Raegan should be able to join in on the fun!

Family vacation – Part 1

About two weeks ago we went to Oregon for a family vacation.  Some of the hubby’s family lives there along with his grandma, who had her 85th birthday, and they were having a surprise birthday party for her.  It was so nice to see all of the family but having 4 children under 4 made this a very exhausting vacation!!  I’m still working on getting all of our photos together from our trip so there will have to be a part two!

The girls first trip to the beach!!IMG_2610 IMG_2615 IMG_2616 IMG_2619 IMG_2624 IMG_2626 IMG_2630 IMG_2635 IMG_2638 IMG_2641 IMG_2645 IMG_2647 IMG_2654 IMG_2660 IMG_2664 IMG_2670 IMG_2672 IMG_2675 IMG_2677 IMG_2686 IMG_2690 IMG_2692

We also went for a carousel ride.IMG_2694 IMG_2705 IMG_2709Then more time at the beach with all the cousins!IMG_2710 IMG_2713 IMG_2715 IMG_2717 IMG_2718 IMG_2725 IMG_2727 IMG_2730

Weekend Rewind

We had a fun family outing on Saturday and headed to the Rutledge Wilson Farm Park. They have a Harvest Fest during this time of year and the kids always love going!

Avery’s favorite thing is the pony rides!  She loves horses and this is the one thing we always try and do.IMG_2777 IMG_2778 IMG_2784
